The Oyo State Campus Monitoring Committee of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has paid a familiarization visit to the newly established Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho, engaging the institution’s management on issues affecting students who recently resumed academic activities.
The delegation, led by Comrade Salam Waris Abioye, Chairman of Universities in Oyo State, was received by the Vice Chancellor, who welcomed the student leaders and commended their proactive engagement. During the meeting, the Chairman introduced members of his team and highlighted the vision, mission, and objectives of NAUS.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor expressed familiarity with NAUS from his previous academic leadership roles at the University of Ibadan, where he served as a Head of Department and Dean. He appreciated the visit and reiterated the institution’s commitment to ensuring a conducive learning environment for students.
The NAUS Chairman congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his appointment and praised the rapid take-off of the university within a short period of its establishment. He described the early commencement of academic activities as a testament to the management’s dedication to advancing education in the state.
Student welfare and safety formed a key part of the discussion. The Chairman stressed the importance of adequate structures to support student representation on and off campus. He raised concerns over the high cost of accommodation in the host community and urged the management to engage landlords on the need for moderation and consideration for students.
Transportation challenges were also discussed, with the Chairman highlighting the financial burden on students. In response, the Vice Chancellor assured the delegation that measures were already underway to address the issue and pledged to intensify efforts following the intervention.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university has provided some student accommodation and is working to expand capacity. He further revealed plans to procure tricycles to ease movement for students within and outside the campus.
Addressing recent challenges, the Vice Chancellor narrated an incident where a student was rescued from an attempted assault by fellow students over allegations of theft. The NAUS Chairman commended the swift intervention and urged the management to ensure the safety of the student while facilitating the recovery of stolen items for their rightful owners.
The meeting also touched on cases of student misconduct involving immoral behavior and violent disputes that led to police involvement. While a disciplinary committee had recommended expulsion, the NAUS Chairman appealed for leniency. The management agreed to review the recommendation and consider alternative disciplinary measures.
Following the meeting, the Chairman conducted an on-the-spot assessment of campus facilities and expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for siting the institution in Okeho, noting its potential to drive educational and community development in Oyo State.
