In a remarkable effort to inspire and broaden the horizons of secondary school students in Ipapo Community, the Future Leaders’ Development Initiative organized an educational excursion for all SS3 students of Ipapo Secondary Schools. The trip was a journey of discovery, combining practical learning with exposure to world-class research and innovation centers in Ibadan.
The students visited the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the University of Ibadan (UI), engaging with various academic and research facilities. At UI, the students explored the Entomology Laboratory, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Department of Biology, gaining insights into the significance of biological and agricultural sciences in addressing global challenges.
The visit to IITA was equally inspiring. It offered students a hands-on experience of cutting-edge agricultural research and sustainable development practices. Key highlights included a tour of the Youth Agripreneur Fish Pond, the Genetics Resources Center, and the Bioscience Center, where students learned about genetic conservation, modern biotechnology, and entrepreneurship in agriculture. The group also visited the Water Treatment Center and the serene IITA Dam, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water management in agricultural productivity.
Dr. Adejumo Sifau, Chairlady of the Excursion Planning Committee, led the initiative with enthusiasm and dedication. Speaking about the trip, she noted,
“This excursion was designed to ignite curiosity and inspire our students to pursue academic excellence and innovative thinking in their future endeavors.”
Accompanying the students was Mr. Folaranmi, a dedicated teacher from Ipapo Community Grammar School, who provided mentorship and guidance throughout the trip. The excursion proved to be an enriching experience, leaving the students with unforgettable memories and valuable knowledge about scientific research, environmental sustainability, and agricultural development.
The day ended with students expressing gratitude to the Future Leader Development Group for creating this unique learning opportunity. This initiative not only exposed them to the possibilities of higher education and research but also encouraged them to envision themselves as contributors to global progress in science and agriculture.
