Friday Evening with Amofin Beulah Adeoye (XV): Celebrating Nigerian Excellence and Ademola Lookman’s Triumph

Sports have been many things to many people over decades and centuries, transcending races and generations. It possesses an incredible power to unite people across cultures, borders, and time, cultivating a sense of belonging and shared pride. This beautiful aspect of human endeavor brings communities together and celebrates achievements that break through geographical boundaries and limitations. The resilience and determination of athletes inspire me personally, showcasing the very best of humanity—just like any other noble endeavor or career path rooted in shared purpose and a beautiful spirit.

I have keenly observed that the path to greatness in sports has been paved by legends who left an unforgettable impression and a profound impact on history. These pioneers, driven by passion rather than financial gain (as there was little financial reward in those days), have inspired new generations of athletes. Today, sports have evolved, offering opportunities for athletes to combine their passion with financial success and lucrative brand endorsements. Yet, the essence of sports remains a testament to the human spirit and perseverance. The likes of Pelé, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, and other exceptional athletes have become synonymous with excellence, inspiring countless young talents to follow in their footsteps. What could be more humbling and legendary?

Coming home, I am increasingly proud of African and Nigerian athletes who have shattered glass ceilings and competed at the highest levels on the global stage. They have proven that Africa’s giants are a force to be reckoned with, showcasing our capabilities and potential. Austin Jay-Jay Okocha’s mesmerizing skills, Kanu Nwankwo’s magic exploits, and others alike have consistently demonstrated excellence that fills us with pride. This legacy continues with the likes of Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Azizat Oshoala, who are taking the world by storm. This is how to be Nigerian.

Once again, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ademola Lookman, Atalanta and Nigeria’s talisman, for being named Africa’s Best Player for 2024 on Monday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). From his humble beginnings in Wandsworth to his unwavering commitment on the pitch, Lookman’s journey is an inspiring tale of hard work, dedication, and love for his country. His achievement is not just a personal victory but a national triumph, bringing joy to millions of Nigerians and inspiring the next generation of athletes, especially football lovers.

Nigerian athletes have consistently demonstrated excellence across various sports, defying stereotypes and pushing boundaries. Azizat Oshoala’s reign as Africa’s Women’s Best Player for over half a decade is yet another striking testament to our athletes’ prowess. Her achievements, alongside those of her male counterparts, have redefined the Nigerian narrative, showcasing our can-do spirit and daring passion to the world. These heroes deserve our accolades at all times.

This is how I choose to see Nigerians. These athletes truly define us, carrying the national spirit and emblem with pride. They share their accomplishments with the world, painting a positive picture of our great nation. Despite challenges and narratives that may not always be sweet, they are the face of hope, redefining the Nigerian story and identity. Their achievements have become a source of national pride, transcending our ethnic and linguistic divides.
